On 27 March 2017 , the inaugural Greensports Africa league kicked off for its first game week. The league ran for a period of 7 weeks and in total 10 teams took to the pitch. Playing in a 4 a-side format, with two substitutes, teams came from far and wide to battle it out for the grand prize of 100,000 Kenya shillings and the privilege of automatic qualification to the fifth edition of Astro-turf Challenge. In the end, after several hotly contested matches where some truly great talent was displayed, Bayern A emerged as the top team winning all their games.
Speaking to the winning team after the tournament, we learned that they had been playing together for 3 years and in fact, in some ways, owe their existence to Green Sports, having formed the team for the purpose of the first Green Sports Astro-turf Challenge. The team members met while they were in high school and playing at the Ligi Ndogo academy and say that they are first and foremost built on friendship with the team being an extension of this. On a Monday to Friday you can find Bayern players in all manner of places, from work to school and you may even spot some playing for teams like Ligi Ndogo FC, Posta Rangers FC and AFC Leopards.
While terming the league as competitive and tough, the team noted that it was all fun in the end and was a great opportunity. They ended the league looking most forward to the Astro Turf 5 tournament. Having won once before and having lost in one final, the team has a history here and are looking to once again emerge on top.
All in all, the inaugural league provided an incredible platform and opportunity for teams and laid the foundation for even more successful seasons to follow. Look out for information announcing when registration for the next season begins!
