The GSA
Game Model

A holistic, principle-led framework connecting our culture, vision, and football identity to daily training, match performance, and player development — across every age group.

Foundation

What Is the
Game Model?

The Game Model defines the behaviours, principles, and decision-making guidelines that shape how GSA teams operate in every phase of the game — ensuring alignment across all age groups while allowing age-appropriate expression and creativity.

"If a GSA player or team is watched for a few minutes, the Game Model should be visible in their decisions, intensity, and understanding of the game."
The Game Model IS
  • Principle-based, not formation-based
  • Development-first, then result-driven
  • Consistent across all teams — not coach-dependent
  • Evolves with age while maintaining identity
  • Prioritizes decision-making, intelligence, and courage
The Game Model IS NOT
  • A fixed system or formation
  • A collection of drills
  • A coach's personal philosophy
  • Rigid or restrictive
  • Focused solely on winning youth matches
Game Identity

How We Play.
Every Match. Every Age.

GSA teams play proactive, high-tempo football that unlocks our inherent athleticism and creativity through intelligence, courage, and collective intensity. These are non-negotiable — regardless of age group, opponent, or scoreline.

Game Identity is behavioural · Principle-led · Observable within minutes · Aligned to G.R.E.E.N

🔥
Proactive
We Take Initiative

We press, not wait. We build to progress, not to survive. We impose our ideas regardless of the opponent.

Identity test: Are we trying to control the game — or just respond to it?

High Tempo
Speed With Purpose

Quick ball circulation, fast transitions, sharp movement off the ball, rapid decision-making.

Tempo ≠ rushing. Tempo = speed with purpose.

🦁
Courageous
Play Forward

Demanding the ball in tight areas. Playing through, around, or beyond pressure. Accepting mistakes as part of learning.

This directly reflects Nerve in G.R.E.E.N.

🧠
Intelligent
Solve Problems

Players recognize phases and sub-phases. Decisions change based on game context. Coaches guide thinking, not movements.

Reflects Education and Growth in G.R.E.E.N.

🌍
Intense
Our African Edge

Immediate counter-press after loss. Vertical intention after regain. Collective reaction — not individual effort.

This is an in-born African advantage. Reflects Energy & Responsibility.

The Identity Test

What a Neutral Observer
Should Say

If someone watches a GSA match for 5–10 minutes, they should say:

💬
"They're brave on the ball."
💬
"They play forward quickly."
💬
"They react fast when possession changes."
💬
"Their players think for themselves."
💬
"There's a clear idea — across all ages."
💬
"They enjoy themselves."
"If all this is happening — the Game Identity is alive."
Player Pathway

Same Identity.
Different Focus.

The identity never changes. The application evolves with age. Every age group plays GSA football — they just express it at their developmental stage.

Age Group

How It Works In Practice

Principles &
Sub-Principles

What is a Principle?

A clear football objective that guides player and team behaviour in a specific phase of the game — regardless of formation, opponent, or scoreline.

Answers: "What are we trying to achieve in this moment?"
What is a Sub-Principle?

A specific behaviour, cue, or action that supports the execution of a principle. Sub-principles evolve with age — principles remain constant. This is what makes GSA coach-proof.

Answers: "How can we achieve the principle in this situation?"
Our Core Principles
Progress ball forward Regain possession quickly Exploit opponent imbalance Protect central spaces Control tempo
Example — "Progress the Ball Forward"
Age
Sub-Principle
U9
Dribble into space
U13
Break lines with a pass
U17
Manipulate opponent to create space

Different behaviours. Same principle. The identity travels with the player — not with the coach.

How Coaches Apply Principles
  • Design exercises that force the principle
  • Reference principles in matches — not mistakes
  • Tag HUDL clips by phase and principle
  • Ask players to explain decisions — not just correct them
  • Encourage bravery and intelligence above all
Culture Pillars

The G.R.E.E.N Standard

G.R.E.E.N defines how we train, play, think, and grow every day. It is not a slogan — it is operational. Referenced in training, used in player reports, applied in disciplinary decisions and awards.

G
Growth
"We are committed to continuous improvement."

Long-term development over short-term results. Players are learners first, performers second. Mistakes are learning opportunities — not punishment.

→ "Your Growth this term has been clear."
R
Responsibility
"We own our actions, preparation, and performance."

No excuses culture. Accountability before authority. Standards apply to everyone — players and coaches alike.

→ "Take Responsibility for your recovery."
E
Energy
"Our intensity is visible and contagious."

High tempo in training and matches. Aggressive transitions. Emotional engagement without chaos. Passive training is unacceptable.

→ "Your Energy dropped in transition."
E
Education
"We understand the game."

Players know why, not just what. Coaches teach principles, not patterns. Mindless repetition is eliminated. Every session connects to the Game Model.

→ "Where was Education in that moment?"
N
Nerve
"We play with courage under pressure."

Brave decision-making. Playing forward. Demanding the ball in difficult moments. Fear-based football is unacceptable. Coaches protect bravery, not punish it.

→ "That decision showed Nerve."
